How to build a strategy game for a phone

September 2, 2026 · Markus Vandenberghe

Strategy games and touchscreens have a rough history. Tiny units, fiddly camera controls, menus buried in menus. Ironhold Dominion is a reminder that the genre can work beautifully on mobile if the designers respect the hardware.

The trick is readability. You should be able to glance at your base and instantly understand what's happening — where resources flow, where the weak point in your walls is. Ironhold uses clear iconography and never asks you to pinch-zoom to find a crucial detail.

Pacing matters too. Phone sessions are short and interrupted, so the game leans on asynchronous play. You plan a defense and the siege resolves whether you're watching or not, which fits how people actually use their phones.

If you're new to mobile strategy, start with the solo content before touching multiplayer. Learn to lose a siege, redesign, and win it. That loop is the whole joy of the genre.
